Wedding Planning – Smart Ways To Cut Costs

Because your wedding is one of the most important days of your life, you want to have the liberty to spend a little to make it special. However, doing it within your means is just as important. You don’t want to start the rest of your life in debt.

Ask yourself, what about this wedding is most important? Spend on that and hold back on the things that don’t matter much. This depends mainly on the bride. Some rent their gowns and spend on a big band, while others want couture gowns set up a laptop or a music player with nice speakers and carefully selected music for the reception.

If you’re unsure, ask yourself: what do I want to remember most? Is it “my wedding was the best and biggest party ever” or “I had my dream wedding because I got my dream gown”? Take it from there.

Here are some smart ways to cut costs:

  • Flowers – Use flowers that are in season, that’s always cheapest. There are many other ways to make decorations and centerpieces other than flowers, you use seashells, balloons, even food!
  • Photography and Videography – Ask a friend to take your wedding photos or consider hiring a film student from a college or university film club, they won’t charge as much as a professional videographer.
  • Reception – Schedule your reception outside of the two major meals of the day, lunch and dinner. Try a brunch or an afternoon snack instead. You can also look for venues that offer “food packages” they’re often cheaper than getting a separate caterer.
  • Souvenirs – Be creative and make them yourself. There are lots of small inexpensive trinkets that are very easy to make but because you made it yourself, it becomes so much more valuable. Another way is by having your friend slash photographer take pictures of the guests in one special corner then give them a copy as a souvenir while you build your own wedding album at the same time; ever heard of killing two birds with one stone?

Lastly, buy a notebook, write all wedding related expenses down, and keep all your receipts. Aside from the obvious costs like ordering the invitations, don’t forget the incidental expenses like having them mailed. Every month, sit down with your fiancée and review your expenses. This is a good way to keep yourself in check and within your budget.
