Making That Dream Wedding Affordable

It’s a common notion that weddings are expensive. That is true only when you feel that you are spending more than what you think you should. Here are some tips on saving money while planning your wedding so you can enjoy your special day without worrying that you’ve just spent a fortune.

Cut the guest list. Define that line between friends and acquaintances. Be ruthless about your guest list and take out those who are not as close to you and your partner.

Rent. You can rent almost anything you can buy nowadays. From chairs and tables, to candelabras and potted plants. If you want a dramatic backdrop, look at theatres and production companies, your caterers may even suggest sources.

Cocktail reception. Theirs is not a rule that you have to serve a full meal at your wedding reception. You can schedule it outside of a main meal time and serve a good variety of drinks and hors d’oeuvres on food stations. This gives your guests a good opportunity to move around and really talk. Be sure though to indicate that it’s a cocktail reception so your guests don’t expect a full sit down meal.

Fabulously cheap. A wedding gown does not have to be expensive and from the top designer in town to be glamorous. Most top designers and wedding stores often have sample sales. If you know where to look, you may find the dress you want without spending thousands of dollars.

Do-it-yourself. Hiring people and paying extra to put the wax seal on invitations or putting ribbons on napkins can be avoided if you pull up your sleeves and do it. You may even have a really fun time with bridesmaids and groomsmen if you ask them to help out one evening.

Off peak wedding. You’ll find that venues and reception halls are a lot cheaper if you have your wedding on a day of the year that’s neither a holiday nor a popular wedding day. You can even bargain for discounts if you have it on a weekday like Thursday or Friday evening.

Orchestra in a box. It is very fancy to have a seven piece band at your reception but consider getting the same atmosphere with a nice audio set up, a laptop, a good selection of songs and someone to click and play the songs at the right time. The real value there is the music and not really from where it comes off of.

These things may be challenging and to make it work, you must have a good written down plan a clear picture of your budget and what’s really important to you as a couple.
