Make It Legal

The festivities and all that celebration is not the only things a couple should think of when getting married. There’s a serious aspect of legalities.

Pre-nuptial Agreement

You don’t have to be absolutely rich to need a pre-nup, that’s a common misconception. You might consider this if either or both of you have properties that you want to keep if the marriage ends, like a family business that’s under your name. Often, pre-marital agreements are drawn up by those with children or grandchildren from previous marriages. This is to ensure that the assets don’t all go the spouse but passes on to the children and grandchildren.

Certify your marriage

Your marriage certificate is a proof that you are married. These documents will then have to be signed by the one who officiated your wedding, your witnesses and then registered. To avoid problems after the wedding, be sure to check with your local government about this process and prepare what you can ahead of time.

What’s in a name?

Some women choose not to change their name most commonly to not be mixed with any bad credit or debts by the husband and his previous wife; some because of business, they have partnerships that may be affected and to avoid the hassle of having to inform all their clients or colleagues of this change. In rare instances, men are the ones who take on their wife’s last name.

Whoever takes whoever’s name or not, the decision has to be made by the couple. It’s tough to be stuck with a name that makes you feel limited but on the other hand, sharing one family name has always been a part of marriage and building a family.
